Janet Groene's
Tic Tac Toe
Who knew that breakfast cereals could be so flavorful? Best of all, you can fine-tune this recipe to use cereals that are sugar-free, organic or gluten-free. You can also lighten the salt or skip the MSG. Don't skimp on the bacon fat, though. It's the secret to this devilishly addictive mix.
3 boxes, 12 ounces each, round and square cereals
3 cups salted, mixed nuts
2 sticks butter
1 cup bacon fat
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon each Tabasco sauce, garlic salt, celery salt and MSG
Put cereals and nuts in a large container. Heat butter, bacon fat and flavorings and pour over cereals, tossing lightly. Spread in shallow baking pans and bake, stirring occasionally, at 200 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes. Makes about 20 cups. Serve in big bowls or package for a pocket snack while hiking. Keep in a cool, dry place for several days or freeze for longer storage.
